Painswick Cemetery

This is a lychgate where corpses were brought to start the procession to the burial site, usually inside the church yard. They are half timbered structures with a steeply pitched roof and are decoratively carved with bells. This churchyard dates to the 15th century and has 99 yews severely trimmed to these smooth shapes. It's said that if there is another yew planted, the devil will shrivel it, keeping the number to 99.
